Design a smart and self-serviced lunch store

S-mart Lunch store is is an unattended, fully automated lunch convenience store, especially for people who have has limited time for lunch. Also, the store is eco-friendly and user-friendly, hope people can have better lunch experience.

Background

Why is the demand for fast food increasing so fast in China?

With the continuous development of society and the accelerated pace of urban life, the pressure on the younger generation is growing. The post-90s office workers are becoming busier and busier during office hours and nearly have no rest time. Therefore, convenience and fast food is the prime option for their lunch.

 

Since the office buildings in the core area of the city have almost no own canteens, the source of these foods is basically the convenience stores and takeaways around the office area. With the increase in the demand for fast food, the convenience store, and the take-out industry have developed rapidly in recent years, and the number of convenience stores has soared. The market size of the takeaway industry exceeded 200 billion yuan in 2017.

The Challenge

Although the demand for the fast-food industry has grown rapidly, there are still many problems. Convenience stores are convenient and quick, but the food is unchanging, and people will get tired of just several choices. There are many people who crush the store and wait in line at noon which can be annoying. There are many uncontrollable factors in the time of take-away foods, and food health problems are also worrying. The taste will be greatly reduced due to the mid-way transportation, and the consumers cannot be completely satisfied.

Fast food is mainly from 3 sources: take-out, convenient store and eat-in

Take-out 

The take-away is more and more popular among office workers and students. It is convenient, fast, and rich in variety, and can meet the needs of different taste groups. It is the main way to get fast food. However, the general price is expensive, the time and taste are uncertain, and there are food safety problems.

Store

Convenient Store

The convenience store in the convenience store is also the choice of many office workers, usually located within 100 meters of the office, so it is very convenient. Although the taste is guaranteed, the selection is single and it is difficult to choose as a lunch for a long time.

Eat-in

The proportion of catering fast food restaurants is small, but it has been growing in recent years. Very creative Chinese fast food is open around the office area, suitable for office workers who have a long break at noon.

I want to get the general needs of my target group for lunch and come up with a solution.

Summarize

Lunch in Cafeteria

Advantages:

Nutrition, deliciousness, high selectivity, low price, short mealtime

Problems:

1、There is very little meat in the meat of boys, and there is a problem of not eating enough.

2、The quality of canteen oil is not enough, and food safety is also a hidden danger.

3、People who have taboos on food are difficult to take care of.

4、There will be more people eating in the cafeteria, and it will be cold after dinner. Packing back will mix the taste and affect the taste.

Lunch Take-out

Advantages:

Convenience, you can go out and eat anytime, anywhere.

Problems:

1、The takeaway is too slow and the dish will be cold.

2、The takeaway is not clean and relatively expensive, so under the premise of noontime, the choice of takeaway is relatively small.

Reflection

Takeaways

Designing the whole system of the S-mart lunch store challenged me to think deeply about the user experience of having lunch with a comprehensive understanding of the whole design process.  Modeling an eco-friendly lunch box is difficult but interesting for me. I was able to try different materials and ways. Moving forward, I hope to conduct more testing and make a product video to show my design system.
